NADH content in type I and II human muscle fibres after dynamic exercise

INTRODUCTION
In a series of studies we have demonstrated that, in
response to exercise or ischaemia, muscle NADH
increases either before or in parallel with increases in
muscle lactate (Sahlin, 1983, 1985; Henriksson et al.,
1986; Katz & Sahlin, 1987; Sahlin et al., 1987). It was
also observed that muscle NADH decreases during lowintensity
exercise, but increases above the resting value
during high-intensity exercise (Sahlin et al., 1987). It was
suggested that the observed changes in muscle NADH
occurred within the mitochondria, and the accelerated
lactate production during submaximal exercise is due to
a limited availability of 02 in the contracting muscle
(Sahlin, 1985; Henriksson et al., 1986; Sahlin et at., 1987;
